Members of the Granby and Kremmling Rotary Clubs replaced 25 birdhouses at the Grand Lake Metropolitan Recreation District.

Grand Lake, CO – On Sunday, October 30, 13 members of the Granby and Kremmling Rotary Clubs gathered at the Grand Lake Metro Trailhead with Ryan Lokteff, Trails Manager for the Rec District, to replace birdhouses lost during the East Troublesome Fire in October 2020. This event marked the completion of a project between the Rec District and the Granby Rotary Club to help the trails area recover from the wildfire.
The first two phases of the project were completed in the summer of 2021. The first phase was to re-seed the Frisbee Golf course, and the second was rebuilding sections of trail that were destroyed by the fire. Rotary volunteers from the Front Range joined the clubs in Grand County for those events.
“We are so proud to have completed this recovery project. There is still a lot to do, but we are proud of the work we’ve done at the Grand Lake Rec District and hope that we can all continue to recover from the wildfire,” said Granby Rotary President Garrett Tibbetts.
On Sunday, the group hung 25 birdhouses around the trails area. Five of the birdhouses came from a local woodworker; the others were made by the Audubon Society. The birdhouses were made for the western bluebird, but many birds that migrate through Middle Park will use the birdhouses. The western bluebird’s summer breeding range includes Grand County. The birdhouses were affixed to burned trees that were cut to keep them from being blown over by high winds.
